After getting the government’s commitment to complete the health center by July 2012, nearly 25 Mumeya men and women are now employed to finish construction – and Mumeya leaders are working to bring water to the center and their village.

I appreciate the opportunity given to me to share my experiences and challenges, first as a woman and second as a COFOA leader in ongoing training. In Guatemala, just being a woman is a challenge. Culturally we are raised to be mothers and housewives and are surrounded by machismo so to do and be something different is very difficult.

Martha Gomez Vda. Batres is COFOA’s coordinator at St. Peter Catholic church in San Pedro Nonualco, a small farming community of about 7000 people. Martha, who is 52 years old, is a widow who has taught kindergarten for the last twenty-five years and supports her three sons, one of whom is in college. Martha is also the President of the newly formed board of directors for the COFOA-initiated community owned store.

You will have a chance to hear from leaders about their progress in getting access to health care, increased safety and reduced crime, better roads and clean water, new programs and activities for youth, and economic development. Interpretation will be provided for non-Spanish-speaking participants.
